CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Gwen was in the kitchen conjuring up breakfast when Wanda, still half asleep, wandered down the hall, entered the kitchen and sat at the little table under the window where mugs of strong hot tea were already waiting. Gwen was busy at the small cooking stove flipping mushroom pancakes in melted yarrow butter. The delicious smell made Wandaâs mouth water.
âI really appreciate you letting me stay with you. Those witches in Bickering Bog were not very kind. What makes them behave like that?â
âAnger and fear mostly, I guess.â Gwen replied, tossing a large batch of pancakes onto a plate, and setting it in front of Wanda.
âThese are delicious, would you teach me how to make them?â Wanda asked as she smothered them with cornstalk syrup, cut them neatly and scooped another forkful into her mouth.
âSure, I would be happy to teach you how to make pancakes.â Gwen answered. She smiled at the sweet little witch sitting there at her table and asked a question that had been on her mind since she first rescued her and her broom last night. âWould you consider staying with me permanently? I would like the company and we seem to get on well together. Besides, I have no idea where you would end up if you went off on your own. Living with me, Iâd know youâre safe.â Gwen dished up a plate of pancakes for herself, drew up a chair and sat down to eat her stack pouring a liberal amount of cornstalk syrup over the top.
âYou mean that, Gwen?â Wanda said her voice a little emotional, âI would love to stay here. This is a haven compared to the Bog. Last night was the first night in a long while I got to actually sleep. Those witches -âwell, it doesnât matter anymore.â She looked off into space wistfully. Her eyes glanced out the back window seeing the half-dug garden. âSay, would you consider letting me work on your garden? That way I would feel useful and, in some way, repay you for sharing your little house. Would that work?â
âYes, that would be great. I have one started, but I have only been here for a short time. Between the two of us we could clear a bigger patch. Think of all the good things we could grow!â Gwen said happily, her pancakes finished. As she stood to clear the table there was a loud hammering on the front door.
âNow, who could that be?â Gwen set the stack of dishes down on the table, but Wanda motioned that she would answer. They both floated over as Wanda leaned her ear against the door and said, âWho is it?â
âDelivery,â came the croaked response.
âFrom who?â Wanda asked cautiously, Gwen echoing her.
âThe Dead Flower Society,â came another response.
Wanda looked to Gwen who shrugged her shoulders, nodded, and Wanda pulled the door open. A HUGE basket overflowing with dead flowers and dried up herbs sporting a large black ribbon bow sat there on the step. The
